Retirement - Ill health

Below you will find a high-level process map showing the various steps involved in drawing your pension on the grounds of ill health.

Click on the numbers below to reveal more information about each step.

1 You apply to be considered for an ill-health pension

If you are potentially able to receive your pension early as a result of ill-health you will normally already be discussing this with HR. HR will therefore request quotations on your behalf from the DB Section Administrator.

2 HR arranges review by appointed medical adviser

HR will arrange for you to be assessed by the Company appointed medical adviser. This is to ascertain if you are eligible for ill-health retirement and if so on what basis. There are two levels of ill-health pension. Further information can be found in the Retirement Guide.

3 Medical adviser provides report

The medical adviser will produce a report with their recommendation.

4 The Company advises the DB Section Administrator of decision

If it is agreed you are eligible for an ill-health pension the Company will advise the DB Section Administrator who will provide the relevant quotation. From this point the retirement process is similar to the process for early retirement.

5 Trustee review

The Trustee periodically reviews all ill-health pensions that are in payment to assess whether the payments should continue and at what level.
